About the Øresund Region
The Øresund Region consists of the Southern Swedish province of Skåne (Scania) and the Danish province of Zealand (Sjælland), which lie on each side of the Sound of Øresund. When the two countries - and the two regions - were tied together by the Øresund Bridge in 2000, a century-old dream came true. Today the bridge gives easy access to the entire region. The two largest cities in the region is Copenhagen – the capitol of Denmark, and Malmö – Sweden’s third largest city. The Øresund Region is one of Europe’s strongest economic centres. A quarter of the Danish and the Swedish GNP is generated here. New networks are continuously established in the areas of business, labour and housing, and culture.
The region has a population of 3.6 million people and is one of Europe's leading educational and scientific centres with 12 universities, 12,000 researchers, and more than 140,000 students. There are more than 4000 unique study opportunities in the region. As a student at one of the 12 member universities in the Øresund University consortium, you are part of this cross border collaboration and you have a unique opportunity to supplement your studies with courses at other member universities. You can also take advanced summer courses at Øresund Summer University. This is a unique study experience, intensive both academically and socially.
The surrounding waters have shaped the people, and a natural way of living has become a characteristic of society in the Øresund Region. Tranquil countrysides and dramatic coastlines offer a perfect contrast to the bustling cities boasting a rich cultural life with many theatres, cinemas, music venues, art exhibitions and dance performances. History is always present in the many castles and manors. Thus, creating the ideal setting for a region that is broadly recognised for its high return on investment in people and an inclusive democratic attitude.
The region is easily accessible from all parts of the world. Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup, is on of the largest airports in Scandinavia and operates direct flights to/from 129 destinations worldwide. Malmö Airport, Sturup, operates flights to most European cities. Transport within the region is easy and fast thanks to a good infrastructure.
